Why is it so easy to believe that God forgot us? Or, to put it another way, why is it so hard to believe he is there and he loves us. Three main reasons:
- Our experiences and circumstances–we look at our lives and struggle to see how a good God could allow this to happen. He must’ve forgotten us.
- Our sin–Because of the sin of Adam passed down, none of us is the way we are supposed to be, and because of sin and the curse we are bent away from God. So we don’t trust or understand God the way we ought or the way we want.
- Our limitations (and God’s greatness)–We cannot fathom what it truly means for God to be God. We are limited in our minds and capacity to grasp God. His infinite power and wisdom and goodness is beyond our understanding, so we di minish him in our minds to something less than he is.
We struggle to trust God’s nature, and we resist him in our nature. This is why it is SO important to always come back to God’s promises–what he says about being with us and for us, always. Today, reflect on these three promises from God, and take him at his word. Let them preach to your anxious, hurting, angry, fearful, or doubting heart.
Deuteronomy 31:6 – Be strong and courageous. Do not fear or be in dread of them, for it is the LORD your God who goes with you. He will not leave you or forsake you.
2 Chronicles 16:9a – For the eyes of the LORD run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to give strong support to those whose heart is blameless toward him.
John 10:27-30 – My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand. My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all, and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father’s hand. I and the Father are one.
