Each week (give or take one or two here and there) I share three things I like – It could be a book, a movie, a podcast, an album, a photo, an article, a restaurant, a food item, a beverage, or anything else I simply enjoy and think you might too. You can find a whole pile of things, especially books, I like and recommend HERE.
1) The Stiff-Arm
I grew up playing football, and I was always taught to tackle low, hitting the thigh and midsection. Of course this presents a challenge if the ball carrier is bigger and stringer than you. But you know what else presents a challenge? Getting tossed on the ground like someone’s annoying little brother. A great stiff-arm is just so fantastic to watch–embarrassing without being showy, physically dominant, not at all subtle. Here are some doozies–WATCH VIDEO.
2) Raul Malo and the Mavericks
This week Raul Malo passed away. He was the front man and creative force behind The Mavericks, a country band with some swing, some zydeco, some mariachi, and some crooner thrown in. I discovered them through one of my older brothers when I was in middle school and their album “Music for All Occasions” came out. I had a chance to see them play as part of the Opry at the Ryman show a few years ago, and they still put on a show. He was a unique musician and creator who foiund success without being pigeon-holed into an era or genre, and his music was fun and heartfelt.
3) Otis Redding
Nobody sang like Otis, and a thousand singer since have been influenced by him. He was all soul.
