A New Book I Never Wanted to Write

My new book will release in March of 2027. A book release always comes with both excitement and trepidation, but the anticipation for this one is a little different (asyou might imagine based on subject). I have written about being a pastor’s kid, about faith and doubt, about find happiness in a fallen world, and about finding belonging in a church. All of those have been personal and, to the best of my ability, honest and faithful. But none of them felt like a vulnerable sort of risk. This one does.

It is a book I didn’t want to write because it comes from an experience no one should have to go through. But it is also a book I couldn’t find when I was navigating divorce and life after. I found lots of Christian books with views on divorce. I found even more memoirs by divorcees. I found almost none of them helpful in my sorrow and pain. This book is neither of those things and my prayer is that Life After Divorce will fill that void and offer particular encouragement, hope, and guidance to those who are in the same situation—either in the thick of divorce or far removed from it and struggling to piece life together.

It is a book of short chapters (scripture, reflection, prayer) on particular struggles, temptations, and moments. It isn’t meant to be read straight through as much as thumbed through to find a particular moment or need. Life changes so fast and so unexpectedly post divorce that readers might find certain chapters unrelatable one month and beneficial the next.

And I hope it is a book that pastors, counselors, and friends who are walking alongside people through divorce can confidently share because it isn’t a quick fix book or simplistic collection of instructions. Rather, I wanted to help divorcees recognize the guidance and hope Scripture offers us in an honest, personal, hopeful way. So often it is hard to know what to say to someone who is going through divorce, but maybe this book can help.

Of all the books I have written, I most wish no one needed to read this one. But sadly I know many people who might benefit from it. I pray it offer deep encouragement and hope to those in the lonely sorrow of divorce.

For anyone too impatient to wait a few months, Vaneetha Risner recently released a wonderful book titled his This Was Never the Plan: Walking with God Through the Heartache of Divorce (A Practical Christian Guide to Healing, Hope, and Strength After Separation). It too is the sort of book I wish had been available when I was navigating divorce—honest, hopeful, practical without being simplistic. I highly recommend it.
