Being married and having two daughters I find hair everywhere–the couch, the floor, even woven into my clothing after doing laundry. Finding hair isn’t so much finding a thing as living in an environment, like summer humidity in Tennessee.
So when I read Luke 12:7, “Why, even the hairs of your head are all numbered,” it has become amazing to me. I can’t count the hairs on my shirts but God knows every hair on our heads and everyone that has been shed.
And when Jesus tells us this, he is doing more than lauding God’s counting ability. First, he is reminding us of God as creator–the one who intentionally placed every hair follicle and decided what color and texture each hair would be. Second he is reminding us of God’s intense care for us. The hairs are all numbered, right now. God did not create us and forget us. He sees and knows and sustains us today.
So when you find that hair on the bathroom floor or in your favorite sweater, thank God. It’s a reminder of his creative care.
