Each week (give or take one or two here and there) I share three things I like – It could be a book, a movie, a podcast, an album, a photo, an article, a restaurant, a food item, a beverage, or anything else I simply enjoy and think you might too. You can find a whole pile of things, especially books, I like and recommend HERE.
Things My Son Needs to Know About the World by Fredrik Backman
I’ve highlighted my love for Backman before, focusing mostly on his wonderful fiction. This book might be my favorite of his though, and it is completely different from his other works. It is also one of the only parenting books I’ve every enjoyed. Backman simply offers reflections on life that he wants his son to know and does so in his inimitable, heartfelt, hilarious style. He writes of falling in love and of soccer fandom, of school work and family vacations. He speaks for tired and down to earth parents everywhere. I read this book before I knew I would one day have a son, and loved it on behalf of my daughters. Now that I have a son, I plan to re-read it for his sake and for my enjoyment.
Carhartt Beanie
First, let me say, these wonderfully engineered pieces of headgear preceded teenage fashion fiends and will long out last them too. Don’t let girls in over sized hoodies, flannels, or Uggs make you think less of the practically perfect winter hat. Having grown up in Minnesota, I am familiar with numerous styles of winter hat. Carhartt is the king of them all. They are snug without squeezing. They are warm without being too thick. They wick moisture without becoming stretched pout and saggy. They are durable so there’s no need to replace them every year, and they aren’t overly expensive.
“O Holy Night” sung by Mahalia Jackson
I am not a big fan of Christmas music (to put it gently and in PG terms). But this one is sublime.
