Psalm 111:9
He sent redemption to his people;
he has commanded his covenant forever.
Holy and awesome is his name!
God’s mighty acts were not limited to the massive highlights of history and the sweeping movements of history–he works with the same kind of power, and from the same heart, every day in and for each of us if we believe. We are the beneficiaries of God’s mighty works in Christ, and nowhere is this more obvious than in redemption.
Psalm 111:9 says, “He sent redemption to his people.” For the original hearers (and singers–it was a corporate hymn after all) of this psalm, this would have turned their minds to God’s redeeming them from slavery in Egypt and all the times he had rescued them from overwhelming enemies. And what were those events but foreshadowing of God’s great plan to redeem and rescue in Jesus? When we read “He sent redemption to his people,” we get to recall all the same things as the people of Israel with amazement, and on top of that, we must recognize that ultimate redemption came in the person and work of Jesus. God sent a living Redeemer into the world to save, and Ephesians 1:7-8 says, “In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace, which he lavished upon us, in all wisdom and insight.”
We were bought with a price. Our lives are not our own. And this means our well-being, our future, our hope does not depend on us. It depends on our great Redeemer.
