Each week (give or take one or two here and there) I share three things I like – It could be a book, a movie, a podcast, an album, a photo, an article, a restaurant, a food item, a beverage, or anything else I simply enjoy and think you might too.
1) The Reuben Sandwich
In mathematics, two negatives make a positive. That is true in almost no other area of life. Pretty much everywhere else two negatives a make an even worse negative. The Reuben sandwich is an anomaly. It starts with three positives: marble rye, corned beef, and Swiss cheese. That is a strong base for a sandwich. However, the remaining two ingredients ruin nearly everything they touch: sour kraut and thousand island dressing. These are foods that no decent person serves a loved one and generally only exist at the back of grandma’s fridge or pantry. Somehow, though, when combined in the proper ratio on the base of rye, Swiss, and corned beef they become a flavorful concoction that perfectly accents the whole. The weaknesses of each ingredient actually complement each other instead of triggering gag reflexes. And what you are left with a practically perfect sandwich. It pairs with chips or fries or salads or soups. It’s a delight.
2) “Down Home Blues” by Gene Harris and Jack McDuff
When Jazz and the Blues procreate, they make beautiful babies. That’s what this album is. Gene Harris is a virtuoso on the piano and Jack McDuff does things with a Hammond b-3 organ that sound a bit like heaven. Throw in some drums, bass, a little guitar, and a dash of vocals and you have sublime album of the sort that will both lift you up and lower your heart rate all at the same time.
3) Adrian Peterson Highlights
I have been a Minnesota Vikings fan all my life, and for nearly the entirety of that time they have had at least one superstar who borders on the absurd (Cris Carter, John Randle, Randy Moss, Adrian Peterson, and Justin Jefferson to name a few). Moss is the most dominant Vikings player every. But Peterson, at his best was darn close–he was among the last of the dominant, bell cow, give-me-the-ball-35-times-a-game running backs. He combined speed with power with what seeming rage. And the results were amazing. Here is an excessively long highlight video for your viewing pleasure.
