3 Things I Like – May 8

Photo by Tony Hand on Unsplash

Each week (give or take one or two here and there) I share three things I like – It could be a book, a movie, a podcast, an album, a photo, an article, a restaurant, a food item, a beverage, or anything else I simply enjoy and think you might too. You can find a whole pile of things, especially books, I like and recommend HERE.

1) Acorns

I have shared this one before, but here it is again because I still use it and still appreciate it. I am not a financial whizz of any kind, but I have some sense of the wisdom and benefit of investing money for the future and putting it to work to grow in value. I have been using Acorns for a few years now and find it really helpful for someone who wants to set aside money in investments but isn’t educated enough or rich enough to get deeply into the market. It is as automated as you want it to be (helpful for novices) or you can be more hands-on. You can give direction what kind of portfolio (small business, growth stocks, conservative, aggressive, etc.) and you can customize it to your preferences as well. They have built out their offerings in rrecent years so you can set up accounts for your kids or set up  retirement accounts too. For a beginner investor who just wants to put your money to work Acorns is great.

2) “God is On Our Side” by Andre Crouch

If you don’t know Andrae Crouch you probably still know Andrae Crouch. He was such a prolific and prominent song writer that you almost certainly have heard one of his songs. He is considered by many to be the father of modern gospel music. I encourage you to go down the Andrae Crouch Youtube rabbit hole; it’ll do your soul good. Oh, and he’s evidence that pastors’ kids can turn out alright. Here is one of my favorites of his.

3) “Blessed Assurance” by CeCe Winans and the Fisk Jubilee Singers

Blessed Assurance is one of the best-loved hymns by Christians from all sorts of backgrounds, denominations, and musical preferences. For example, I love Alan Jackson’s simple country rendition of it from his album, “Precious Memories.” But this version is exceptional. CeCe Winans is a contemporary Christian and gospel music legend for good reason. When she gets her hands on a song she takes into a whole other dimension. But the truly stand out aspect of this performance is the Fisk Jubilee Singers, the historic and grammy award-winning ensemble. They cross genres and are rooted in history. And they are really, really good.
