Each week (give or take one or two here and there) I share three things I like – It could be a book, a movie, a podcast, an album, a photo, an article, a restaurant, a food item, a beverage, or anything else I simply enjoy and think you might too. You can find a whole pile of things, especially books, I like and recommend HERE.
1) A Little Book on the Christian Life by John Calvin
Most Christians have heard of John Calvin. Many Christians have opinions on John Calvin. Few Christians have read John Calvin. I would suggest this book as a wonderful starting point. More than he was a theologian or dominant religious figure, Calvin was a pastor who cared for the souls of people. That’s what this book conveys. It is reich and simple, clear and deep, with instruction for the hearts and lives of Christians. It would be an ideal book to read with others as a fuel for encouragement and sharpening each other. More than anything, this is a worshipful book, highlighting the richness and gladness of being in Christ and walking with Him. It is a delight to read.
2) Department Q
Netflix used to be the king of the hill when it came to original programming, but in recent years they’ve been left behind as Amazon, Paramount, HBO, and others have cranked out prestige series right and left. While Department Q isn’t a powerhouse show that will gain massive attention, it is a perfectly formulaic (I mean that in a good way) police procedural relate with all the right characters and twists. There is the beleaguered and scandalized lead officer, the ragtag team of castoffs, the quirky friend, the sharp-tongued therapist and even a meaningful side story about difficult family relationships. The plot is nicely paced with the right number of twists to keep you interested to the end and enough clues along the way for a clever viewer to solve whodunnit. Will this show keep you awake at night with your mind spinning? No. But that’s the point. It is fun. It is clever. And it’s worth a gander.
3) “Freddie Freeloader” by Miles Davis
This is a Jazz Standard, and like other classic works of art that might mean it’s familiar, and it absolutely means it is great. The track features Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Cannonball Adderley, Wynton Kelly, and Paul Chambers–which is to say a legendary cast of players. If this was the soundtrack of my morning every morning I would rarely be in a bad mood.
