Call to me and I will answer you, and will tell you great and hidden things that you have not known.
– Jeremiah 33:3
The first phrase of this verse is a whole paradigm and promise for prayer. We call to God and he answers us. It does not tell us when we must pray, how we should phrase things, what our posture should be, or what kinds of requests qualify. It’s not like an essay in school that needs a particular format and proper citations. Nor does it say that pious or flowery language captures his attention or affections.
God simply says “call to me and I will answer you.“ Let’s take him at his word!
Even more remarkably, he tells us how he will answer us. When the verse says that he will “tell you great and hidden things that you have not known” it means he will give us more than we ask or imagine, something better than what we think is best. He will reveal himself to us. By praying, we will know him better.
So we have a paradigm and a promise, a guarantee that all we need to do is call and he will answer with something infinitely good–himself.
