Each week (give or take one or two here and there) I share three things I like – It could be a book, a movie, a podcast, an album, a photo, an article, a restaurant, a food item, a beverage, or anything else I simply enjoy and think you might too. You can find a whole pile of things, especially books, I like and recommend HERE.
1. Chuck Taylor’s
There was a time, once upon a time in an America far far away, when these were the premier basketball shoes. Then there was a time, not so long ago in a Nashville and Brooklyn not so far away, when they were the premier hipster shoes. Now they are not the premier anything, but they remain awesome. Chucks are versatile and comfortable. They work for toddler’s and old men alike. They can be suited, denimed, shortsed, or khakied. They rarely draw attention, but they can pull together a whole ensemble. I prefer the low-tops, but only by a small margin. I consider them a staple of the discerning (and not overly formal) man’s wardrobe.
2. The Station Inn
If you’ve lived in Nashville for any length of time, you’ve certainly heard the complaints about how much the city has changed. The rule is that if I have been here longer than you, I get to gripe about how much you and yours have ruined this beloved place. Needless to say, the city has changed (and is changing) much. While I don’t begrudge the change or dislike much of what is new, there is a certain sweetness to “old Nashville,” those places and experiences that remind us of classic country music, cheap beer, and simpler times. The Station Inn is maybe the greatest example of this. Tucked into The Gulch, a trendy expensive neighborhood of restaurants and high rises near downtown, The Station Inn is an unobtrusive single story brick and stone building with no windows and a metal door. They feature folk, Americana, and bluegrass acts. They serve beer, popcorn, soft drinks, and bad pizza. Every Sunday evening they have a bluegrass jam that features whatever local musicians want to sit in and has no cover charge. The floor is sticky, the ceilings are low, the lights are neon, the seats are uncomfortable, and the employees are gruff but friendly. And it is awesome. Whether it is a ticketed show, or an open jam, be sure to stop in when you visit our great city.
3. “Everybody Wants to Rule the World” – Tears for Fears
This is, very simply, the Friday mood you need. Or really any other day. We listened to it while cleaning up after dinner this week and it was awesome.
