Each week (give or take one or two here and there) I share three things I like – It could be a book, a movie, a podcast, an album, a photo, an article, a restaurant, a food item, a beverage, or anything else I simply enjoy and think you might too. You can find a whole pile of things, especially books, I like and recommend HERE.
1. Nickel Boys
I am somewhat late to the party on this one given that Colson Whitehead released it several years ago. But is there really “late” when it comes to great books? We intersects with them at the time when we are ready, otherwise we can’t recognize and receive their greatness. Nickel Boys is the rare novel that tells a whole story, rips your heart out, lifts up, makes you think, pricks your conscience, moves you to love a character, and all in less than 300 pages. Whitehead excels at spare prose to paint vivid pictures. He weaves imagery into his story without being saccharine or heavy handed. He doesn’t offer neat and tidy resolution, but he satisfies the desire of the reader for the right kind of ending. I loved this novel and highly recommend it.
2. Twizzler Bites
I don’t eat a ton of candy, but when I do it is on a road trip (because calories and mature taste buds both do not exist on road trips). And when I am on a road trip I choose Twizzler bites. They are the perfect road trip candy because they are easy to eat, not overly sweet, and you can accidentally eat a whole bag of them over the course of a few hours and think nothing of it. If you have small children in the car they are easy to secret away in a noiseless receptacle so you can surreptitiously snack. As a bonus, they are mild enough in flavor not to interfere with other snack choices, either salty or sweet. And they don’t even ruin the taste of gas station lattes.
3. Don’t Wanna Fight – Alabama Shakes
I recently learned that Alabama Shakes will be touring again and that reminded how much I love this song. Turn it all the way up.
